Challenge of playing a piano concerto while conducting the orchestra from the piano

Rehearsals are going on full speed for the concert with NYKO Sinfonietta on Sunday 9 February (www.nykosinfonietta.se).  This is my second attempt at playing a piano concerto while trying to somehow conduct or direct from the piano.  Obviously there is no extra conductor on the podium, and the orchestra carries a bigger responsibility of knowing the music better and listening to each other better.  The first time I and NYKO Sinfonietta did this was with Mozart's piano concerto no.21.  It was truly a beautiful, rewarding and most satisfying experience.  I sure had the most fun time in the world playing this concerto with my friends of NYKO Sinfonietta, of whom I hold utmost respect and admiration.  It was a humbling experience and we reached a new artistic milestone.

We are trying this time with a romantic piano concerto of my favorite composer, Robert Schumann, his Introduction and Allegro appassionato op.92.  Schumann in my opinion is the ultimate romantic composer.  His language speaks directly to my heart, and his temperament is most similar to mine.  His music feels almost like a mother-tongue to me.  He wrote several one-movement piano concertos that aren't played as often as his most famous three-movement piano concerto in A minor.  I think that's a shame as i think the Introduction and Allegro appassionato in particular embodies the essence of Schumann-ness.  The biggest challenge for me is head-banging during the Introduction to keep the orchestra together as this physical motion makes me dizzy and nauseous.  I have told this to the orchestra, and we simply have to find another way to synchronize our heartbeats.  And I think I can still physically show the pulse through my body without constantly moving my head up and down.  I will see how it goes at the next rehearsal!

The Beethoven Project was successfully completed in sold-out concerts, and we are now about to launch a new exciting project.  Watch this space! :-D

The Beethoven Project!

What journey it has been!

NYKO Sinfonietta and I are coming close to an end of the Beethoven Project.  We have played Beethoven symphonies nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 despite the covid pandemic.  The orchestra has grown a lot in terms of its playing, musicianship, the number of musicians, and the self-confidence in the musicians themselves.  We have received much coverage in the media, gained a few more new sponsorships and raised awareness of the orchestra in the community.  During the project, orchestra has basically transformed itself and has even changed the name from Nya Kammarorkestern Uppsala to NYKO Sinfonietta.  I myself am so thankful for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.  I am incredibly grateful and humbled by the trust and the dedication from the musicians of NYKO Sinfonietta.

Västerlöfsta kyrkans musikstiftelse of Mr. Anders Wall and Mrs. Charlotte Wall has been supporting us and is sponsoring us again in our upcoming concert.

NYKO Sinfonietta appoints Duk-Kyung Chang as the chief conductor

Since its foundation 3 years ago, NYKO Sinfonietta has invited a series of guest conductors to lead each concert.  After a successful collaboration in early 2018, NYKO Sinfonietta has appointed Duk-Kyung Chang as the chief conductor starting in the 2018/19 season.  Duk-Kyung Chang's aritistic vision includes performing all 9 symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven in next 3 years, not only to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth in 2020, but also to firmly establish the calibre of the orchestra in Sweden.
